Scripture memory is on my mind these holidays. I've got quite a lot of time and I'd like to try to compile or create some resources on how to make the process less mind-numbing and more effective. You know, finding a way to lessen the frustration lurking in the zone where you've repeated the verse 50 times and it's still not sticking. For auditory learners, I guess the first resource I'd recommend is the Bible Experience. It's a pretty cool audio Bible. I'm gonna hunt down more resources over the next few days.
Another thing I'd like to do is plan menus and recipes. Eating's pretty important to me and I spend way too much time being disorganised about it. Any ideas or suggestions for my recipes and menus? Beef is pretty steep in Singapore so I'm gonna have to try to skimp on it.

Ok... I've totally been wanting to buy the audio Bible! I travel each month for work and I would love to listen to it on my drives! Sometimes its easier for me to soak in the meaning of what I'm hearing, rather than reading. You know?
ReplyDeleteGood luck planning your menus! I need to do the same thing...it will help save money and stress :)
I found this memory help website where you can type in the information you want to learn, and they make like virtual flashcards for you. So the first time, it'll say the entire verse. You click the next arrow and it shows you the verse minus a couple words. The more you click, the less is shown and the idea is that you'll learn it by the end of the flashcards. It worked pretty well for me! I'll have to go home and snag the link. I need to get back into memorizing Scripture, too. I started that at the beginning of the year via Living Proof Ministries, but along the way fizzled out.
ReplyDeleteYou can plan menus on SparkPeople.com. Not sure if that's what you're wanting or not, but they have recipes, too at SparkRecipes.com. :)
For memorising there's also http://www.walkingbible.org/
ReplyDeleteIt does mini-songs for a verse or few, but they are very cheesy and too short for long pieces of scripture.
I have the Message audio bible I must copy some books onto my phone.
I've found that memorising chunks of scripture helps! (ironically)
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of context and meaning, and so when I remember huge chunks of text that come together, I really see the beauty of the text. Also, I like to use KJV. Some say the KJV was written with the specific intent of being read aloud, so when read with proper cadence it gains it's full impact.
But I think the best way to memorise scripture is to come to grips with the importance of scripture. I used to view it as a "spiritual discipline", but now it's more of a hunger to know what God says, and know what He says accurately, but that sometimes leads into digging up the commentaries/hebrew/greek. I guess the idea of "relevance", and that scripture IS relevant?
I really liked Sngsy's idea. I struggle with memorizing as well. I'll do the same, read 50 times and have it never stick. I'll have to look into this because this is something that I've always wanted to have be a part of me. To truly know scripture.
